About this Project:
This project is intended as a digital component of Nadja Masura’s dissertation, and was authored by her for the purpose of educating the reader about the process and product of the Elements digital performance collaboratively created by the Digital Performance Group at the University of Maryland in February of 2006. The project documents Nadja’s coordination of the performance work and the participation of all its members in the process. All photographs and video of the process were taken by Nadja Masura or Peter Rogers (if Nadja is in the picture).

About DPG:
Karen Bradley, Moira Jackson, Paul Jackson, Nadja Masura, Brandon Morse, Mike Sparrow, Aaron Tobiason were the graduate students, faculty, and staff who composed the Digital Performance Group. This unique group of artists, performers and technicians worked together across the disciplines of Art, Dance, Music and Theatre utilizing their skill, interest, and equipment to create a new kind of performance and process.

How to use the Project:
To use this digital object, simply choose one of the four sections (pre-show, workshop, show, or post show) and navigate through the choices. You can always return to the main menu by clicking on the symbol that looks like the main page. It is suggested that you view the selections in order (Preshow, Workshop, Show, then Postshow) to get a full picture of the digital collaborative process in action.

  • Preshow contains information on how the group formed and worked through the Fall Semester in meetings and online. This includes several proposals, a timeline, and link to the group’s blog working space.
  • Workshop documents the process of collectively devising the performance. The process of scripting online and with Access Grid, creating visual/audio media, and setting up motion sensing triggers, creating choreography and other performance, working between art and technology, as well as creating a playful media sensitive space—are covered in daily notes illustrated with photographs and short video clips.
  • Show contains the program, video clips of each scene Air, Earth, Fire and Water as well as a slideshow of stills from the production.
  • Post-show includes video of the audience talk-back and a paper on interdisciplinary performance with reflections on Elements process.
